One key aspect of making crypto gains is spotting new narratives. Sometimes, narratives motivate teams to build projects. Other times, a lucky strike at some idea sparks a new narrative.

The longer your timeframe, the higher-level narrative you want to capture. That’s because you want to take advantage of good entries before the next bull run comes and you want to make sure that the narrative survives until the bull run.

One of the strongest long-term narratives is the so-called “Layer 1 rotation.” You are familiar with it, most likely because of the Cambrian explosion of Ethereum scaling solutions and alternative chains. But, the history of Layer 1 rotation goes much deeper.

It might surprise you, but many of the ideas making headlines today were conceived by crypto ancestors. Hal Finney first described NFTs in 1993. And tokens existed on Bitcoin in the form of Colored Coins

Attempts to extend Bitcoin’s functionality or replace it with something more capable have existed for years. Ethereum resulted in Vitalik Buterin not being happy with offered solutions.

The narrative is that the next chain will be the chain. The further we go into the future of crypto, the more teams onboard on the quest of unseating the incumbent networks. We, as investors, want to keep an eye on new players because they generate a lot of attention and demand over months or even years.

Currently, we have an obsession with Move-oriented languages. Move is a programming language made by Meta when it wanted to conquer blockchain space with its stablecoin. I’m pumped about this myself because Move is really good, like any tech that comes out from Facebook (personal opinion).

We keep tabs on new chains like Aptos, Sui, and Sei. But, Move isn’t the only sub-narrative. New languages and features will spin new narratives, and new teams will offer new chains. Some of the winning chains of the next cycle probably don’t even exist yet.

One of these chains will become “the new” Solana, other will become “the new” Avalanche. The key is to keep looking, even if the market conditions deteriorate substantially.
